On March 14th, we joined schools around the globe in the student led #MyFreedomDay initiative. The goal of this event is to raise awareness about modern day slavery. At AISC we decided to make our awareness campaign a week long event, beginning with a gallery walk in which we outlined the history of slavery, as well as including modern day slavery stories.

We also created a video and used our school’s outdoor chalkboard wall for students to answer the question, “What does freedom mean to you?” and created a paper chain on which students listed human rights violations associated with the lack of freedom.

On Thursday, March 14th, we initiated a blue ribbon campaign to further inform our community and invited everyone to join a group photo after school. To cap off the day, we coordinated with some students to support them in their lap-a-thon to raise money for a local organization called Madras Christian Council of Social Service that helps house freed child slaves in Chennai, India.

Our last event was held on Friday, March 15th when we joined the high school’s Celebration of Learning. At this final event, we displayed our video, pictures of the week’s events, the information from our gallery walk, and further information. It was an exciting and enriching week.

TASMUN X SDG CHallenge:

Secretary General Award

We were inspired by the necessity to liberate victims of modern day slavery, seeing as it has been a widely prevalent issue among the modernizing world. Thus, on March 14th, we joined schools around the globe in the student led #MyFreedomDay initiative. The goal of this event is to raise awareness about modern day slavery. At AISC we decided to make our awareness campaign a week long event, beginning with a gallery walk in which we outlined the history of slavery, as well as including modern day slavery stories. This initiative ultimately addressed SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Through raising awareness of modern day slavery, we helped create a stronger alliance against the unjust act of modern day slavery. Our efforts were aimed to help free people from an unceasing life of conflict and violence. Additionally, we focused on SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, as when people are enslaved, they do not have access to paid work, nor do they contribute to economic growth. To conclude, our project tackled these two SDGs, and helped our school community become more aware of the prevalent issue of modern day slavery.
